Sudan: Farmers Face Arrest Threats Amid Crisis in SAF-Controlled Northern State More than 175 farmers in areas controlled by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Northern State are facing possible imprisonment after failing to repay bank loans following the collapse of the winter agricultural season, according to local reports. Residents in the Abri area said the crisis was driven by repeated electricity outages, which severely disrupted irrigation and livestock production, leading to widespread crop losses and financial hardship. Protests over the situation were reportedly met with a security response, with forces deployed from Wadi Halfa and Dongola to disperse demonstrators. Resistance committees and civil society groups accused security forces of using tear gas, conducting home raids, and arresting civilians demanding basic services. While the situation is concentrated in SAF-held areas of Northern State, similar economic and infrastructure pressures have also been reported in other disputed and conflict-affected parts of Sudan.
